The Bridge End of the Island

Because the bridge lands here, Bellara is usually our first stop on any island run. The name dates from 1961, but most of the housing went up later, through the 1970s to 1990s, with unit and townhouse blocks mixed through the detached homes.

  1. Sand over a high water table

The ground under Bellara maps as estuarine and tidal-delta sediment, and rain-fed island groundwater fills it. A trench opened for a new water line or sewer junction here fills about as quickly as digging goes, so a pump runs alongside the hole on those jobs.

  2. Brittle pipes under the street

Most street water mains here, and most of the public gravity sewers, are asbestos-cement, a brittle material that opens cracks at its joints and gives groundwater, sand and roots a way in. It is the same failure Unitywater chases with its sewer rehabilitation program.

  3. Flat blocks against a tidal beach

There is almost no fall to shed rain near the foreshore, so when heavy rain arrives on a rising tide, stormwater pits and gully traps can back up toward the house. Council's flood viewer carries high, medium and low storm tide layers, with the worst fringe along the Passage side.

  4. Sewage that gets lifted, not gravity-fed

A dense network of pump stations moves this flat suburb's sewage, so if storm weather cuts power to a station, overflow gullies can spill on the lowest lots.

Bellara Plumbing Questions

Call (07) 3067 4274

Who owns the sewer pipes around my Bellara property?

The street sewer main and the pump stations lifting flow for this flat island suburb are managed by Unitywater, while the pipes running inward from your property connection are your responsibility.

Why do hot water units fail faster in Bellara?

The sea breeze off the Pumicestone Passage carries salt that settles on tanks mounted to outside walls, and it rusts jackets, unions and relief fittings well before the cylinder itself gives out.

Can stormwater back up into my Bellara yard?

Yes, because the flat sandy blocks near the foreshore shed almost no water, and a downpour landing on a rising tide can push runoff up through the yard drainage faster than it escapes.

Are the water mains under Bellara streets old?

Most street mains under Bellara are asbestos-cement, which fails by cracking at joints rather than splitting, so a break upstream can drop your pressure or send silt into house fittings.

Do you work on the units near Sylvan Beach Esplanade?

Yes, we work the unit and townhouse blocks along the esplanade as well as the detached houses behind them, and the same fixed quote before any work starts covers both kinds of job.
